While I never slept on watch, I knew people that did. It does happen. More to the point, even if there was a guard it would not have been high priority duty - not exactly where you send the A-team. I'm not sure I accept the bible account as being accurate in the details without some other corroboration (like details from the Romans). Since this was nothing more than a small regional problem, there is no reason for the records to have been expunged. The Romans were meticulous record keepers, and little or no data has been forthcoming to support it.
