I think it's a wonderful thing that the 100,000 UAW workers got the day off on Nov. 7 to participate in the exercise of democracy. Working men and working women all through the upper Midwest set a sterling example for their children and provided a valuable lesson in civics. GM, Ford, Chrysler et al obviously concurred, so much so, that they agreed to the day off (with pay) for these patriotic activists. Michigan Gov. Engler was most upset with the results of the election in his state and has wrongfully placed the blame on the patriotic union activists. Sounds like Sour Grapes to me ... because Michigan went for Gore and also elected a Democratic female senator.

We should do everything possible to make it easier for people to vote, not more difficult. One quick remedy would be to stage all national elections on a weekend ... two days ... Saturday and Sunday. There is no logical rationale to hold an election on a Tuesday, in the middle of the work week.
