just when you thought it was safe to go for a stroll, along comes 'pavement rage'....

London Fast Lane Proposed

Leah Garchik, San Francisco Chronicle

Tuesday, December 5, 2000

The merchants of Oxford Street, London's main
shopping thoroughfare, have proposed the
institution of sidewalk fast lanes, in which
pedestrians walking slower than three miles an hour
would be fined about $14. Operation Tugboat
would employ marshals to patrol the streets and cite
violators.

"In an ideal world there would not be any
regulations," spokeswoman Rhona Harrison told the
Daily Telegraph, in a story forwarded to Personals
by Jonah Ahlberg. "But there are too many people
and there is too little space."

The plan to divide the sidewalk into a fast lane and
a strollers lane would reduce "pavement rage," said
Harrison.
