InP is to GaAs as GaAs is to Silicon. Undoubtedly higher performance in almost every respect, but also significantly more expensive, harder to process, and much less mature.

TRW needs high quality InP circuits for some of their ultra-demanding military sub-contractor systems work. Don't be surprised if you continue to see reports from them (and others, esp. Hughes/Raytheon) about progress in this field.

But it will be many years - I would guess five, minimum - before the technology will be mature enough for it to be applied to any type of commercial or consumer application.

In short: if you want to worry about competing technology, worry about silicon CMOS or bipolar, or maybe SiGe - InP is hardly even on the radar screen at this point.
