The reason is the obvious opportunity for hanky panky by the mostly democrat boards. Plus, no one EVEN TO THIS DAY has clearly articulated the standards for the recount. There is no doubt the Broward County standards were far looser then the Palm Beach Standards and even the Palm Beach Standards were far looser then the standards that existed IN THAT OFFICE on the day of the election. The bottom line is that unless you adopt as the ONLY standard A HOLE IN THE BALLOT you raise the specter of potential mischief. JDN
You Republicans were dead wrong in your assumption - also known as paranoia - that there would even be any hanky panky. As shown by Judge Burton, your paranoia was unfounded. That goes for the FlSC also as they have a long history of ruling in support of the right to vote and they have not acted counter to that in this election. Judge Sauls is a Democrat but obviously did not rule on a partisan basis. It was also a Democrat who, in Palm Beach County, saw there were ballots in Gore's pile that were Bush's votes and made the correction. In this whole process, it is a Democrat who has proven capable of performing their duty. No more and no less. Unlike Republican counterparts a la Mrs. Harris, Goard, and so on and so on.
It is unfortunate that standards used from county to county were not the same. If they had been, I believe that could have saved a lot of grief, as so fervently spun from the Republicans. The fact is that Florida specifically provides that each county set its own process and they did so. Within the law. You may not like that and, shoot, I may not like the lack of uniformity either, but that is the law in Florida. Do you dispute the fact that that is Florida law?
As to this 'mischief' so loudly spouted from the Republicans, isn't it ironic that the only mischief seen so far has been done by Republicans? Seems your side would think it best to quiet down on that issue, with all that egg on your face and all... |
