Re: Asian Broadband Stats - Japan's CM, DSL, i-mode

Thread- Well let's see how the data access battle in Japan is shaping up:

DSL: 2,573 subs
Cable Modem: 463,000 subs
i-mode: 19,679,000 subs!!

Looks like i-mode has a slight lead.<g> Yes I know i-mode is not broadband. But one would gather that Japan's mobile wireless data users will be extremely quick to jump on newer wireless broadband rollouts slated to begin soon.

I was surprised at the number of CM users. Keep in mind ATT which is the world's largest MSO(outside of China), has 1 million CM subs. So Japan's 463,000 is a significant number. I have to dig upstream to find out how many cable subscribers there are in Japan. I thought there weren't many so the take rate must be fairly high. -MikeM(From Florida)

Cable Internet Use Grows Dramatically

MPT Survey Says

November 7, 2000 (TOKYO) -- The number of subscribers to Internet service via the Japanese cable television network as of the end of September 2000 rose to 463,000.

That is 1.4 times the 329,000 as of the end of June, according to an Internet users flash report issued by the Telecommunications Bureau of Japan's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.

This rate of increase is about the same as the prior three months (end of March to end of June).

There were 2,573 users of ADSL or DSL services, which is double the 1,235 as of the end of June.

Users of mobile Internet phones like the i-mode numbered 19,679,000 at the end of September versus 12,723,000 as of the end of June.
