In light of INTC's announcement I'm trying to grasp the dynamics of what's going on in the chip market and don't know whether to be worried or excited. On one hand we have AMD selling out it's production capacity except for Duron's, slashing prices aggressively, and on the verge of releasing even more impressive chips along with increasing MB supply for their next generation. (All of which no doubt spells even lower prices for mid-range T-birds and lots of upgrading if the upgrade urge/wallet ratio of yours truly is any indication.) OTOH, we now have flat INTC revenues and their mention of order cancellations. Does this indicate a slowdown which will/has/or could affect AMD also, or might AMD's sales be contributing to INTC's flat revenues? It's tempting but hard to think that these order cancellations are taking place to allow the same customers to then order Athlon's, so it tends to suggest a general slowdown. OTOH, if AMD really has/is selling out production capacity of Athlon's they must be meeting projections and their price slashing could be a real body blow to INTC. Obviously if INTC's news today reflects a slowdown generally then there's room to worry about how AMD is actually doing. OTOH, AMD's aggressive actions, when combined with their previous guidance, projections, products and INTC's flat revenues, suggests that some nearly extreme excitement is warranted about how they're likelyto do in the near future.
