That is just personal observation. I know that at the dotcoms before the summer everyone would have the latest and newest computers. I imagine that it would be the same in Silicon Valley.
But elsewhere, in the back offices of banks, brokerage, warehouses, customer fulfillment centers, in doctors offices, in schools (especially the administrative parts) I never see anyone replacing their computers in 3 years. They limp along until people start complaining and things get really screwed up.
I imagine in Silicon Valley everyone works with a computer. If you don't have a computer, you can't work.
But in the rest of America, a lot of tasks have not been automated. Of those that have been automated, I don't know many where the end user is highly satisfied and does not think that it can be greatly improved.
I haven't seen any studies that support this point of view. It is just personal observation.
