"PIII Needs to Compete With Athlon In Other Segments"

If Intel has a lock on the corporate segment and their PIII product offering is so bad that they can't compete in retail, why wouldn't they offer PIV at little or no margin just to deprive AMD of the profits? Aside from retail what other segments does AMD compete in right now?

Maybe I'm paranoid, but I think Intel would do this if they could (fortunately they can't right now).

Two other comments:

(1) The PIV is far from ready for the corporate environment so it is going to be aimed strictly at retail for the forseeable future.
(2) When was the last time AMD pulled any big surprise out of the hat in terms of product offerings? DDR was critical, but I can't remember being floored by anything. Why should we expect anything different in 2001? They are doing a good solid job in an extremely difficult environment, but they are not about to deliver a knockout blow to Intel. A year ago, I thought it was possible.

Thanks for your patience and responses to someone who does not begin to claim to understand the nuances of this business.

Regards,

Jeff
