I've also had this thought... although I prefer the training-wheels analogy to the "excel-template" analogy. A bike-newbie with training wheels is not truly balancing, but is merely appearing to balance... going thru the motions without having to wipeout and learn the hard lessons. Eventually, the training wheels must come off. It would be a sorry state of affairs if everybody kept their training-wheels and was limited to 5mph turns in a large radius. Likewise, most Christians must eventually replace their manufactured motivations and restrictions with what these motivations and restrictions were designed to emulate.

Buddha once told a parable:

A man on a long journey came across a mighty river which he could find no path across. He built a raft to traverse the river, which carried him safely to the other side. The man was so grateful to the raft that he continued to carry it for the remainder of his journey.

Another man once said:

When I point to the moon, look at the moon and not my finger!
