INFORMIX SOFTWARE: SGI servers based on Itanium processor and Linux offer Informix users unprecedented flexibility and performance
DEC 8, 2000, M2 Communications - MENLO PARK, Calif., and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- SGI (NYSE: SGI chart, msgs) and Informix Software, the Database Company, today announced that the Informix database will be available on SGI servers based on the Intel Itanium processor and the Linux OS. SGI and Informix will jointly port the Informix database software onto the Itanium processor and Linux OS from SGI and tune the performance at an Applications Solution Center (ASC) located at the SGI headquarters.
Application Solution Centers are a program that was conceived and developed by Intel to create centers for optimizing IA-32 applications and for providing expert assistance to port applications over to IA-64 architecture.
For more than 15 years, SGI and Informix have delivered Informix products on the SGI IRIX OS to numerous satisfied customers, including AOL, WAM! NET, GTE-TSI, Warner Brothers and Hannaford Brothers.
"SGI's innovation in modular computing along with the Intel Itanium processor architecture offers Informix users flexibility and performance at a reasonable price," said Mike Fister, vice president, Enterprise Platforms Group, Intel.
The Itanium processor and Linux OS from SGI complements the company's existing and proven MIPS/IRIX platform running Informix solutions.
This modular computing technology allows users of high-performance computers to expand and upgrade only the elements they need or add new technologies as they become available. Traditionally, users have had to buy expensive "one size fits all" systems that either were too much for their needs or became obsolete quickly and had to be replaced. With specialized SGI modules, or "bricks," customers can decide how to build their system, using only the bricks they require to solve today's problems.
"The SGI brick architecture coupled with the SGI ProPack for Linux 1.2 and SGI Pro64 compilers for the Intel Itanium processor allows Informix customers the flexibility of building a system with specific, tailored configurations," said Brian Staff, vice president of marketing, Informix Software, the database company. "Informix users will be able to run Linux systems extremely efficiently by taking advantage of the SGI Advanced Cluster Environment (ACE), a High-Availability and Mission-Critical Support offering for IA-64-based systems from SGI."
"Our Mission-Critical Support for Linux provides SGI customers with remote system monitoring, proactive failure notification, diagnostics and repair, plus on-site response with a six-hour system restoration commitment if required," said Ken Jacobsen, vice president, ISV Partner Programs.
SGI ProPack for Linux 1.2 combines the innovation and cost-effectiveness of open source solutions with SGI's well-known strengths in technology leadership, product quality and support gained while promoting and supporting the IRIX operating system for high-performance computing.
SGI ACE for Linux is a fully tested and integrated cluster package for compute-intensive environments. SGI ACE for Linux brings together SGI's strong heritage in scalable-computing products and services with the latest developments from open-source communities. The integrated packaging combined with support and service offerings provides users with a ready-to-go Linux cluster solution for production applications. |
