re: My house in Silicon Valley was almost 50 years old, yet it was built on a 5,000 square foot lot. That style (Eichler) is one of the most common housing types in Mountain View and Palo Alto.

There was no shortage of land back then, so I see the small lot syndrome as a fundamental California issue.


Have you never wondered why your lot is so small?

They would have had to destroy perfectly good Orange groves in order to build bigger homes. That didn't become economically feasible until the high tech business really got going.
