whatever moral inconsistencies, questionable ethics, and partisan motives influence their posture and legal positions.

You are so right. Partial hand counts are OK in New Mexico but a horrible fraud in Florida. The letter of the law must be followed when it helps our guy (pick your topic - statutory deadlines or ballot applications). But if following the letter of the law hurts our guy's chances, then avoiding voter disenfranchizement is more important. Yes, avoiding voter disenfranchizement is a sacred cause but of course, if necessary, we'll try to get a bunch of the opposing sides votes thrown out on technicalities or we'll get the legislature to override the voters. Court decisions which help our guy are wise but those which hurt our guy are partisan travesties of justice.
