I have long argued that Bush should have very publicly extended his hand toward Gore, accepting a recount on the "very reasonable" condition that dimpled chads not be counted. He could easily have resorted to his current stance had Gore refused. With such a limitation, the issue would have been over because Bush would have won without a problem.


I agree (and thanks for the compliment) but this did not happen because Bush would have probably lost. Just compare the size of the undervote to voting patterns, county by county. A strict recount standard would have helped Bush, but the large undercounts are still in Democratic areas. The Republican areas tended to use the more accurate optical scanner machines.
