Dan, here in Florida I have watched over the last 40 years a great change in the parties. Going back nearly everyone was a registered democrat. Frankly, if you would have shown them the platforms of the democrat and the republican party they would have most probably elected the republican platform. But, their parents, grandparents, had been democrats and so they were too. Another thing, there were few viable republicans running for office and you couldn't vote in the primaries (most primaries were only democrats running) if you registered republican. The republicans didn't run multiple candidates for each office. Just one sacrificial lamb. Now, over the years people are changing and changing to republican. I think there is just about an even number in each party now. Our state legislative delegation is around 80% republican, our mayor and city council are republican dominated, etc.. Republicans have strong fidelity to the party but many still registered democrats are really republican philosophically and cross over and vote republican. Anyway, that's our story.
