Talking is much over-rated

I agree 100%, and I identify with your self-description with respect to talking vs writing. But it seems to remain a reality that good verbal skills are a necessity for success in many social and business areas. I'm trying to imagine, for example, pecking away on a laptop at a cocktail hour rather than participating in the mandatory small talk ... :)

Do you have friends or acquaintances who tend to be "monologists", dominating conversations and seemingly incapable of engaging in a dialogue? If so, how do you deal with it?
