HOBSON'S CHOICE. With every passing day and with every legal "decision" and recount this election loses legitimacy. Whoever wins will have the weakest mandate in US history; that mandate is getting weaker as this process drags on. Gore is a hypocrite when he says that democracy must be served by a full and fair count; in the first place that is now impossible, and in the second place, how does deflating the Presidency serve democracy? I am not an American but America's position in the world makes this election a crucial issue for us all. George W. Bush is not perfect, but he is the certified winner in Florida, and through his actions and statements since November 7th is clearly the best man for the job. If Gore should somehow snatch victory from the jaws of defeat then the next four years will rival the Watergate era as a low point in American history and, by implication, world history. The stock market has already voted for Bush, so has world opinion.
