Vodafone Expects 1 Million New Christmas Customers, Paper Says
By Bret Okeson

Frankfurt, Dec. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Vodafone Group Plc expects to win a million new customers during the Christmas period, German paper Welt am Sonntag reported, citing an interview with Julian Horn-Smith, chief executive for European operations.

Horn-Smith predicted the company would grow strongly in 2001, driven by customers' need for data transmission.

Vodafone expects to get a quarter of its sales from data transmission by 2004, said Horn-Smith, who added the goal was realistic because 11 percent of the sales of subsidiary Mannesmann Mobilfunk D2 come from SMS messages.

The world's largest wireless phone service company may be the best performing phone stock worldwide in 2001, according to analysts at Merrill Lynch & Co.
