IF al gore would have demanded a fair statewide recount from the git go he would have had public opinion and the high road on his side. he also would have avoided the us supreme court calling selective recounts unfair (b/c THEY ARE!). that is why this fair undercount / unfair full recount situation is not FAIR. i believe al gore would have gotten such a count and it would have stood IF he had requested it initially. even if he didn't, heck, even i would sympathize with the guy after i got over the shock of the integrity and courage he would have displayed (as opposed to talk about).

I agree with you, though I would point out that the mess of Florida election law didn't seem to support the full recount approach. But Al Gore should have been calling for it loudly and repeatedly, not just once or twice.

I hold no brief for Al Gore's behavior in this election. He's sent in his lawyers to scrap point by point.

But the Republican behavior has really got my goat. Fighting recounts was no high road for them; it was their to their best advantage. They have bad-mouthed and delegitimatized manual recounts, which are a standard part of the process, and leaned on the openly partisan decisions of Katherine Harris to stall them and prevent them from happening. They have also trashed any court that ruled against them. At least the Gore side hasn't done that.

I mean, think about it logically:
If your complaint is partial recounts, what's the obvious remedy? Full recounts
If your complaint is lack of standards, what's the obvious remedy? Setting a standard
Why haven't we heard the Bush camp ask for these obvious rememdies? Because they're not complaining about the manner of the recounts. No recount would have been acceptable.
