Richard, you've identified true factors. I'd add in the chadded ballots as another factor that made this possible. But simply saying both candidates aren't interested in fairness doesn't seem to reconcile my thoughts. Only Gore actively sought what I feel is the biggest factor making this possible- a candidate seeking unheard of and unintended in law, territorial advantages. Un-American, IMO.

I can't imagine what you'd think Bush has done to equal Gore's actions, when in fact Bush refused to take part in such an unheard of form of ballot counting battle, and has rightly, I think, fought such. Sure, he didn't demand statewide counts, and perhaps that failure is somehow weak, as it were, but other than fighting a true injustice Gore sought, he's basically left the system alone to work as best as it could given what it is.

The middle, where criticizing both men may be balanced and nice, may be a nice place to be, but I don't really see strength in that position in this case, at all.
