survive as a democracy I believe that our country survives on the priniciple of one man- one vote. Okay that glosses over women, but for this argument that is beside the point. The U.S. surives because people believe that if they vote, their vote will count toward their representative in the bigger government where things really happen. Throughout history, some elections have been won by political machines manipulating the law and the results for their candidate. These manipulations have almost always led to bad results. Why? because the actual process leads to good results. A technical winner has no authority. The most important thing on trial here is whether a vote counts, or if important friends and relatives count more. TP
