Frank, You are right, there are no definitive solutions. Wireless will hit a wall and spectrum is a finite resource. Eventually another network will be rolled out and I also agree with you that will have to 'wire'. We have to keep in mind that tot everything over wire today can be ported to the air. Like not everything is ported to server farms and SAN's since most of the information today is stored in tape libraries. Everytime we go one step up, we have to live with the legacy of the past step.

The US owns content.(By content I mean film libraries, Hollywood, show business, Windows all in the lingua franca English language). Content that cannot be reproduced (with same success) somewhere else. The US framework tries to maximise the value of content rather thant the networks that will carry it. Example: MSO's pass to content owners the lion's share of their revenue keeping just a little. Just note the US framework killing Napster, fighting to protect intelectual property, copyrights and keep a stranglehold in the traditional media that distribute content. This poses a problem for the US framework. Networks being obsolete how could they keep the stranglehold? What if my next-next-generation network could be built? That is not what would work to the advantage of the US framework.
CONCLUSION: The US framework is reactionary and wouldn't invest in leapfrogging..

For Europeans it pays to maximise the value of the networks that will carry and access content. To be revolutionary rather than reactionary. The Europeans will try to undermine the value of credit card companies by having terminals that would allow users to log into cells, having their account info stored in their mobile terminal to get services according to their subscriptions accounts and the service providers service offerings. Who would own these customers? The mobile operators.
European will try to invade the US with their framework and the US will pursue the maximisation of the value of content everywhere.

Note1: Owners of networks want content to be free. Owners of content want networks to be free.
Note2: I noticed the noise level of the "wireless causes brain damage" increasing lately.
