Democrats can continue for 4 years to blame their loss on Republican interference, on defective Florida laws, on unfair counting rules,(no dimples)
Such is the cost involved in upholding the rule of law...
The law existed as to what the deadline was for certifying votes, 7 days after the election. That law left the actual election mechanisms up to the popularly elected canvassing boards, including the standards for conducting manual recounts, if necessary.
That the rule of Florida election law.... you, the canvassing board, can handle the actual election process so long as you certify your votes within 7 days (minus extenuating circumstances)
But democratic thinking apparently permits them to push the envelope to the point of re-interpreting the election law, changing the election deadlines, altering the standards for validating votes, and basically "suing" their way into office.
They think they can sue even their own democratic canvassing boards to get their way, forcing them to count ballots that were erroneously cast by the voter, not because the machines didn't work, or because of fraud... etc.
So for Bush to entertain the concept that there should be a recount of the entire state, let alone these 3 counties, when NO ONE found evidence of fraud, malfunction.. etc, a recount that had no standards in place for validating votes, would have been stupid and irresponsible.
He simply couldn't subscribe to the belief that it was alright to rewrite the rules of an election AFTER it had already occurred.
That's what is not far about this recount. The utter lack of hard and fast standards. And the fact that ballot validation standards were being altered AFTER the election in an attempt to create votes.
Sorry if I was a little redundant, but I wanted to hit upon the essential elements of the Republican case once more.
