Mornin' Masher,

two things:

1. i agree with you feelings about the florida supreme court and those who did not vote for gore and should not have their votes attributed to him.

it does not mean that the secretary of state was "fair" in choosing which votes to count and which not to, etc.

furthermore, it does not absolve the republicans of doing "improper things."

my argument is not the one side is holy and the other tainted - my opinion is that the reality is that they are both tainted.

2. (do i really want to go here?) as a citizen of chicago i would say that 90% of the people here think that Richard Daley Senior was a crook and 90% of the people think his kids (the mayor, Richie and his brother Bill) are honorable excellent politicians (now that sounds contradictory)

i think, with these guys, it is important to look beyond the sins of the father.

parenthetically, on more than one occasion i have tried to bribe chicago officials - an alderman for a zoning change, a building inspector for a venting violation - a highway supervisor for some lamp posts i had appropriated - and never once have i been successful in giving them $. i prevailed in each of those three situations, but not through money - they have learned that it is no longer okay to take a bribe - now they want power and respect - you have to bow frequently and say yessir a lot.
