I think GOP tactics in this fight have deeply angered Democratic politicians. I think the fact that you see Gephart and Daschle publicly defending Gore -- a man they don't like and would be better off without -- bespeaks a deep level of anger. I suspect bipartisanship will be thin on the ground for a while, though conservative Democrats like Senator Breaux may try to throw their weight around as swing votes.

Besides, it's an old rule of politics that when you win in a squeaker, you owe your base big-time. The far right will not be content with a few nice words.

So GWB will have his work cut out for him, even if he turns out to be a far more accomplished politician than I currently take him for...
