Ron,

I'm sure many Republicans are very angry as well. They perceive that Al Gore and David Boies are trying to game the system. The Democrats perceive that Katherine Harris and Jeb Bush and Jim Baker are trying to game the system. Politics ain't beanbag.

But the GOP's basic attempt to paint manual recounts as an Al Gore invention is something that professional politicians know is not true, and they resent it.

My deepest anger is for Katherine Harris, whose conflict of interest was glaring and obvious, and who did not even try to maintain an appearance of impartiality. The supervisor of elections in an extremely close race should not be working for one of the candidates! If she had just said to the canvassing boards, "The election is very close. Count carefully. If you need a couple of extra days, I will accept amended returns until 10 days after the election if you tell me why you need the time." that would have been seen as fair play. Instead, she sent letters around saying that no manual recounts would be accepted unless the canvassing board could prove that the machines had completely broken down. The fact that they had probably missed more legal votes than were contained in the margin of victory was not to be noticed. Anything to run out the clock while her guy was ahead.
