Vodafone to bid for Optus mobile arm-paper
LONDON, Dec 10 (Reuters) - UK mobile phone giant Vodafone Plc is planning a five billion pound ($7.25 billion) bid for the mobile arm of Australia's second-ranked telecoms firm Cable & Wireless Optus Ltd (Australia:CWO.AX - news), the Sunday Business newspaper reported.

The speculation follows reports last week that Japanese mobile giant NTT DoCoMo Inc was reconsidering a possible joint bid with Telecom New Zealand for Optus's mobile arm, which would have given each a 20 percent stake.

An industry source told Reuters last month thatVodafone, which has over 18 percent of the Australian mobile phone market, was interested in Optus's mobile phone assets.
