Hardball politics.

Which is a direct result of a two party system.

In a multi party system, especially one with no majority party, there is more need for the parties to be open to cooperation since none of them can govern on their own. So parties with only a few seats can have an impact on the legislative process.

With effectively only two parties on the national scene there is no incentive to cooperate. So it becomes cutthroat and hardball.

A strong third party -- Libertarian by choice -- would be a major improvement to the whole legislative process.
