Presstek and Alcoa Packaging Equipment to Show New
Aluminum Can Printing System
HUDSON, N.H., May 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Presstek, Inc. (Nasdaq:PRST), located in Hudson, NH, and Alcoa Packaging Equipment (APE), located in Englewood, CO, jointly announce that a new imaging system for the aluminum beverage can market will be shown at Cannex, an
international metal packaging show, to be held in Singapore in June. This new system, developed jointly by Presstek and APE, will use Presstek's PEARL(R) imaging technology and PEARLdry(TM) thermal plate materials to create printing plates used on Alcoa's advanced metal decorating equipment. The use of Presstek's proprietary thermal imaging and plate technology allows for the production of halftone images on aluminum beverage cans with no significant increase in production costs per
can. It significantly reduces press make ready times and simplifies the entire pre-production process, thus responding to the growing need within the aluminum can decorating market for quicker turnaround and shorter run lengths. APE's direct-to-plate system employs a special version of Presstek's PEARLsetter(TM)computer-to-plate digital, off-line platemaking product. Using Presstek's thermal imaging and
plate technology, this new system produces high quality thermal, waterless plates, imaged in register directly from the computer's digital file. When used on the advanced Alcoa metal decorating press, these digitally imaged plates produce high-quality, halftone images which, up until this time, have not been commercially feasible for the aluminum beverage can industry.
Robert E. Verrando, Presstek's president and chief operating officer, said, ``The application ofour imaging and plate technology comes at a time when the beverage can packaging industry is experiencing the same market drivers as is the general print market. Shorter runs, faster turnaround, and the application of demographic marketing have the same benefits whether you're
producing aluminum cans or printed pieces. And Presstek's technology is responsive to these requirements.'' David W. Groetsch, president of APE, added, ``Continued innovation of the already highly functional aluminum can is a very high priority for Alcoa Packaging Equipment. The application of Presstek's complementary plate technology with Alcoa's advanced printing press is another major
step in bringing this two-piece container to a higher level of marketability.'' Presstek, Inc., founded in 1987, has developed PEARL, a patented, proprietary non-photographic, toxic-free, digital imaging and printing plate technology for the printing and graphic arts industries on a worldwide basis. PEARL's thermal laser diode system is capable of
imaging various types of Presstek printing plates either off-press or on-press to produce high quality, full-color lithographic printed materials. Presstek is also engaged in the development of additional products and applications that incorporate its proprietary PEARL technologies and consumables, including both computer-to- plate and other direct-to-press applications.
Alcoa Packaging Equipment, one of 21 Alcoa business units, provides engineered equipment solutions for the beverage industry and other production manufacturing processes.
