I generally hire out the really big stuff ... major plumbing and major electrical. I have a friend who moonlights in his off hours and is both competent and trustworthy. Everything else, I do myself. In my case, it wasn't always a desire to save money ... there's a real problem in obtaining qualified craftspeople these days. And if you call someone to fix plaster walls, often they'll try to persuade you to just slap a sheet of drywall over the problem. The easy way is seldom the best way. One of the first things I did with our present house was to rip out a couple of false ceilings that were constructed to mask some water damage in the original plaster ceilings. Then I took my time and fixed the problems correctly, restoring the ceilings to their original height and dignity. After a while, I got tired of fixing the mistakes of others, so I sought out knowledgeable people and consulted books at the library ... the older the advice book the better. The best book on roofing that I found was written circa 1955. I've always believed that the individual homeowner can generally do a better job with some basic know-how and lots of time, than someone with more know-how and not-so-much time.
