Maybe I'm slow (just ask anyone that knows me), or just really dense, but I'm assuming that your post was in reply to someone else, because I fail to see the correlation to my post. I need frequent enlightenment. : )
Be that as it may, I will attempt to reply. Flaming isn't my style, unless you attempt to upset me. Voicing a logical opinion rarely does, agree or not.
"Why do we have elections?" Good question. In our democracy, I believe it is to choose someone to represent and make our decisions in affairs which we relinquish the authority to do so. This is first and foremost based upon the premise that "We the people" retain the power. "Isn't it so that people can vote?" In a word no. Voting is a right, but voting for the sake of voting is hollow, at best. But I don't believe that was the intent of your statement (May I have the liberty of discerning your intent?) Elections do afford the people the opportunity to exercise their right to vote. They can choose to vote or not. Having someone worth choosing is another issue. Voting responsibly is another, both I'm sure do not need addressing here. Therefore, voting should neither be taken for granted, or exercised lightly, unless one believes that their permission to grant someone power and authority likewise.
I really do not see any harm in recounting the votes. I don't believe that it would hurt Gov. Bush at all, win or lose. Having stated that, I also believe that Vice President Gore and his legal representatives should tell the whole story. Meaning: If his argument is based on "I won the popular vote", therefore, "All the votes should be counted". Then he should reveal how many absentee ballots are not being counted at all nationwide. If their argument is based on the moral high ground of inclusion, then the counts shouldn't be limited to select precincts, counties, and/or states. There are other unrepresented votes (literally millions) which no one is taking an interest in. I can't help but wonder how high their 'moral standard' would be if the money to cover legal expenses were cut off. Would the contest, protest, and recount ever have happened? Or as long as it has?
I really do want to know who got the most votes. As long as they are valid, and that validity is unquestionable. I do not want someone discerning my vote for me. I'd rather it would be thrown in the trash, no matter the candidate. I use to work with the old IBM punch cards many moons ago (as I'm sure there are others here that have also), and I believe that there are some who are inflating the issues to fan the flames of fear, in order to manipulate the issues. We are working with a system that is almost as old as the outdated legislation that governs it. This is fertile ground for distortion. Fear can become an uncontrollable emotion, of which I have victimized myself many times (Just re-read my previous post). I do not want anarchy, nor do I want anyone in a position of power to abuse the system to the point of creating the same. Hiding, inflating, and misquoting the law and the facts, in order to prove one's agenda, promotes this.
I guess you could say that I have a very low tolerance for authority. I have no tolerance for the abuse of authority. I am constantly amazed and have to adjust to the tolerance level of others (which is probably healthy). This is the bias I carry into every argument, but I try my best to understand the other side.
This is a tough election. It embodied power (all three branches of govt.), money (OURS), and principles (everyones). Any of which can be a mess (to the point of war) in and of itself. It is a miracle that it has remained as 'orderly' as it has.
We'll find out in the next few days if a real "Flame" is in order. For now this will have to do:
WWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
I'm sure you didn't want a civics 101 lesson. But you did ask. Now you know why no one around here asks for my opinion! Hee, hee, hee...
