A Simple Plan: Let the Recount and Democracy Begin Again

Even though many states have employed them as the final arbiter for decades and even though manual counts have put more than thirty U.S. Presidents in office, the battle rages on in Florida as to what fair standards are. The battle threatens to prevent the counts from continuing at all, which is a serious mistake. The count will happen sooner or later under the Freedom of Information act, so why not now when legitimacy of the President-elect is still within reach?

Since no one agrees on what constitutes voter "intent" and some do not trust the manual recount procedures, this is what should be done. In fact there was no reason it should not have been done weeks ago. Then the Courts can render a verdict, but more importantly so can all of America.

The procedure is simple: each county, regardless of their differing standards, should create specific subsets, and then both count and physically separate the subsets of ballots into the following categories (or something similar):

1) No marked or punches whatsoever, simply a write-in name for President

2) Chads hanging by 1 or 2 corners

3) Chads hanging by 3 corners

4) Dimpled chads

5) Pregnant chads

The point of this is whichever candidate is leading on the basis of #1 and #2 would be more legitimately accepted as the President-elect. If the same candidate led after counts of categories #3-5, then even better. Acceptance would finally be possible by the majority of the now divided, not united, citizens of the U.S. of A.

Most Americans want more facts rather than less and all Americans deserve them. Let the count and democracy begin (again).
