Quehubo007, Houston besides being the world's oil and major project construction company center is also probably the world's largest refining and chemical complex.

The Houston Ship Channel (also third busiest port in North America), 50 miles long, is lined with refineries, chemical plants, both petrochemical and chemical, plastic plants and rubber plants (dependent upon oil & gas derivatives), ammonia plants, lube and blend plants, and cogen facilities-It is a massive complex of all of the basic industries so important to our economy.

With all of those processing and manufacturing facilities emission sources, air quality will never be great in Houston, although it can always be improved..... But with those basic industries also comes a huge tax and economic base that helps drive the Texas economy.

So Texas has chosen exactly the opposite of California in terms of attracting and encouraging basic industries- and you get the air pollution with any industry- true, that is reality....

Houston does though have one advantage over Socal in terms of air pollution. It is flat and enjoys daily ocean breeezes off of the Gulf of Mexico. So usually Houston does not suffer from stagnant air as does Socal.....

And alternative energy technologies are just around the corner that should help reduce air pollution pretty much in all basic/heavy indsutrial concerns....
