The court managed to preserve a semblance of peace between the justices earlier in the conflict, ruling unanimously and anonymously to set aside another Florida Supreme Court ruling.

By yesterday, however, any such pretence had evaporated and
when the nine justices meet for their historic showdown today, the
confrontation between Right and Left is expected to be
acrimonious.

Whatever the final verdict, critics say that by ruling on what appear
to be party lines, the court has done itself huge damage.

Today was supposed to be the start of a four-week holiday for the
Supreme Court. Justice Rehnquist usually throws a party and leads
a festive song. Now the justices are more likely to be grilling than
toasting one another.
