The Vancouver Sun reports in its Saturday edition that a decision by Yorkton Securities to disclose whether it or its analysts own shares of companies they are recommending does not go far enough, a senior investment executive says. The Sun's David Baines writes that Mike Ryan, vice-president of Leith Wheeler Investment Counsel, says: "I think it's a horrendous conflict of interest to have a big position in a stock and go out and recommend it. At least disclosure leaves it up to the buyer to make a decision whether he is going to respect the analyst's opinion in view of his compromised position." For the disclosure to have meaning, however, Mr. Ryan says a number must be provided -- either the raw number or a percentage. Until now, Yorkton included in its research reports a general statement that the firm or its employees may own shares of the company under review. On Thursday, Yorkton announced that it would disclose whether the analyst owned shares in the company under review, whether any employee of Yorkton is a director of the company and whether the firm holds any compensation options or shares of the company.
