China's Guizhou to Invest US$2.11 Bln in Telecom Services

Guizhou Province has announced plans tp spend 17.5 billion yuan (US$2.11 billion) to develop and upgrade its telecom services, aiming to bring the telephone penetration rate up to 10 percent by 2005.

The number of fixed telephone subscribers has increased by 400,000 this year in the province, bringing the provincial total up to 1.341 million, with a penetration rate of 3.99 percent.

Mobiles are no longer cause for remark. The number of mobile users in the province has shot up from 14,000 to over 400,000, while the number of pager users has exceeded one million. In addition, there are 35,000 registered Internet surfers.

The annual growth of the province's fixed assets investment in telecom has been maintained at over 30 percent over the past five years. Its telecom traffic volume and service income have remained in the front ranks in the country for five consecutive years.

The province has decided to lay two more backbone fiber optic cables and build an intelligent communications network and a broad-bond multimedia digital communications network within the province by 2005. It will also strive to bring telephone services to 60 percent of the administrative villages.
