Ownership dispute far from settled

A three-day hearing to resolve an ownership dispute over a rich Sudbury ore body ended Friday in Toronto.
But adversaries Inco Ltd. and Wallbridge Mining Company Ltd. of Sudbury may not get a decision on their conflicting claims for several days, if not weeks.
“I have a feeling it may be some time before we get a decision,” Wallbridge president Wayne Whymark said, following the end of the hearing in Toronto before the provincial Ministry of Northern Development and Mines.
Lawyers for Inco and Wallbridge had been arguing since Wednesday that their respective companies have legal claim to a valuable ore body under Kelly Lake.
Inco says it owns the rights to the entire deposit, while Wallbridge argues it has a claim to part of the ore body.
Whymark said he believes a ruling on the dispute may take some time because his company and Inco have been asked to submit documents that will be reviewed before a decision is made by the province.
Whymark and Inco officials have refused to discuss details of this week’s hearing until a ruling is announced.
Inco announced last March it had discovered 10.5 million tonnes of ore laden with nickel, copper and platinum group metals.
