With super-regional telcos BellSouth (BLS: -1.06, 42.44), SBC Communications (SBC: -0.62, 51.06) and Verizon (VZ: +0.12, 56.31) -- which spun off from AT&T as a result of its government-ordered breakup in 1984 -- boasting higher market caps than their estranged parent, the thinking is that one of them might make a bid for Ma Bell.

That said, AT&T's $62 billion debt would make a daunting, possibly indigestible, mouthful, said sources quoted by the Journal.

Meanwhile, AT&T is in the process of selling about $25 billion in assets with a view to lessening its debt load. It also plans to raise cash through an initial public offering of its broadband division.
