A good example of how to handle a close election, is the US Senate contest between Sen Gorton and challenger Cantwell. Both agreed to an amicable procedure without the intense bitterness.

Another example is John Ashcroft. Carnahan had been dead for weeks by the time the election rolled around, plus there were some iregularities involving keeping poling places in Democratic districts open longer, and it was a close race. Ashcroft did not chalange it however even though it can be argued that he was the qualified canidate who recieved the most votes as dead people being usually considered unqualified for the US senate. (There are some senators that I think might be less qualified then a dead person but thats another issue...)
