I work in Santa Clara off 237, but I live in the East Bay (San Leandro). I take AMTRAK whenever I can, but sometimes the workload requires that I drive down 880. This is an absolute nightmare. Leaving the house at 5pm, it's hit and miss wether or not I will hit heavy traffic. Leave after 5:30, fuggadaboudit!! A 25 mile trip can take 2 to 2.5 hours, and people do this daily!! Sections of 880 are only 3 lanes. Once again the environazi's stonewall every attempt to widen freeways. After all, it will only encourage more people to drive, thus increasing pollution. Meanwhile, the construction boom continues in Milpitas/Santa Clara. How do these planners think that people will get to work. If it weren't for the fact that my wife is from Alameda, and we get free daycare from the in-laws, I would already have moved. I've sort of convinced her that it would not be in our best long-term interest to remain in the Bay Area. In addition to the high costs and the congestion issues, education is a big problem. Teachers cannot afford to live here, causing some cities to build subsidized-rent apartment complexes for teachers. This spring we will be taking an exploratory trip to Texas to determine if it would be a suitable place to move to. I have relatives in Houston, but we will be checking out Austin and San Antonio, as well. All you Texans on the board, where are the most desirable locations to live?
