The efficiency of the new technology is one aspect, but the emissions at very very low levels has been around for 10 + years. The air in southern industrial areas is that way in part because they have refused to make adequate investments. It seems the smog and degradation to life is a badge of honor to some. I visited some plants in the south were in the NE NOx would be required to be < 10 ppm and these same technology plants would be pumping 10X more because they were not required to install emission control equipment.
