Gottfried,
Technically a bear trap is one sprung by bulls on bears. The bulls buy up enough long stock (or commodity or whatever) to have the bears at their mercy when they spring the trap and do a short squeeze.

That is an old definition, however, and the term bear trap and bull trap are used interchangeably to indicate any sizable whipsaw off an apparent reversal. Or so it seems to me according to the current lingo.

We need someone to solidly define these terms in modern market usage to avoid adding insult to injury. It's bad enough getting trapped without even knowing the name of the trapper!
