Compaq Releases First-Ever PCI-X
Development Platform to Hardware Vendors

New Information on Compaq Web Site

HOUSTON, Dec. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Continuing to demonstrate leadership in industry defining
technologies, Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE: CPQ - news) today announced the availability of the
industry's first PCI-X platform to PCI independent hardware vendors (IHVs). The Compaq PCI-X
developer's kit will enable IHVs to develop and test PCI-X cards and applications in real PCI-X
environments, thus expediting the release of PCI-X products to the industry. The kit will aid PCI-X
product development to ready the market for mass release of fully supported PCI-X products to
customers in the first half 2001. For more information, please visit the Compaq Website at:
www.Compaq.com/PCI-X.

The PCI-X developer's kit is available exclusively to IHVs and functions as a drawer upgrade for the
Compaq ProLiant(TM) 8500 server. The platform supports a maximum bus configuration of 64 bits and
can run at speeds up to 100 MHz, allowing developers to experience the maximum benefits of PCI-X.
Compaq's enhancements to the protocol boost bus efficiency, avoiding I/O bottlenecks and achieving
optimal system performance, which will benefit customers upon release of PCI-X products.

Compaq will license and provide support for the PCI-X developer's kit to key IHVs that are dedicated to
creating PCI-X solutions. Companies receiving the PCI-X platform include Broadcom, Emulex, LSI Logic,
QLogic, and Tundra Semiconductor.
