SHORT POSITIONS

-- Son of Rambus: You remember Rambus, the Mountain View chip company that recently became one of this year's hottest IPOs? Some of the same folks who helped get Rambus off the ground are also behind Sunnyvale-based Chromatic Research, which makes a new type of programmable chip that can be used to run a number of different PC applications. One of those applications is DVD, or digital video disk. DVDs are expected to become hot consumer electronics products, eventually replacing VCRs and CD-ROM players on PCs. Over the next few weeks Chromatic is expected to strike deals to provide its chips -- programmed for DVDs -- to several large PC makers. Company officials say their chips are cheaper and more versatile than traditional video chips from companies like Milpitas- based C-Cube.

Chromatic, which has a 300-person workforce, is still private. If its chips are as good as it says, one thing is certain: It won't be for long.
