When I say that less than half the voting public voted for Bush, I referred to "the voting public" meaning the part of the public that actually votes. This is largely the same group that will vote in 2004, so it is this group that GWB2 needs to worry about convincing.

I am not convinced that the economy is really falling apart. The economic boom of the '90s was driven by demographics and technology, not political influence, and the conditions that drove it are still in place. The markets have contracted, but the markets are not the economy, and the contraction, as far as I can see, mainly represents a return to sane valuation (I can say this with equanimity, having been out of stocks for close to a year and a half).

Even with that belief, I still think that GWB2 is going to have a hard time satisfying his supporters. Too many of them have convinced themselves that everything they object to in American life is attributable to Democratic leadership; they are going to be much upset when the ascent of a Republican does not result in some enormous change.
