I trust and respect the people I work for on a daily basis. They are good, decent people, and we all work hard to turn out the best product we can.

However, I have also experienced the sinister side of corporate America by sitting in on 50 to 60 union-management bargaining sessions. The corporate suits came in four years ago and tried to "persuade" our union local that it would be in our best interests to abandon our old-fashioned pension plan (1966) in favor of something "better" and more modern. Bottom line was that the suits wanted our $1.5M in pension plan overfunding so as to earn fat bonuses for themselves. I smelled a rat, and this was confirmed when I personally went out and hired the best pension lawyer in town, the best actuary in town, spoke to the international's pension expert and also our local union attorney.

The vote from our hired experts was 4-0 to keep the plan as is.

Management also brought in the actuary of our pension plan (the pension money is jointly administered by management and the union), told him what to say, smiled approvingly when they pulled his string, then acted surprised when we didn't bite. There also were several meetings when management agreed to something orally, then came back the next week with the proposal in writing. Wasn't even close to what was presented orally.

After a while, even someone like me begins to get wise to the tricks.

From that experience ... and it lasted some nine months before we signed a new contract ... I have learned not to trust anyone. No one. Especially corporate suits that I see once every three or four years.
