Atmel Introduces the World's Smallest SPLD Package

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Atmel Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML) announced
today that it is now offering a plastic package for its line of ``SPLD'' programmable logic devices
that is more than 70 percent smaller than the standard package usually available for such devices.

The TSSOP (thin, shrink, small outline package) configuration is now available for Atmel's
complete line of programmable logic devices including the ATF1 6V8 series, the ATF20V8 group
and the Company's family of ATF22V10 circuits.

Atmel is the only integrated circuit manufacturer that offers this option for programmable logic
devices. This new package has a footprint for a 20-pin circuit that is 71 percent smaller than for
the same device in a PLCC (plastic J-leaded chip carrier) package and 78 percent smaller for a
28-pin device. The new package is 80 percent thinner for either pin count.

``Smaller packages will allow system designers to reduce both the size and weight of their circuit
boards, thus reducing overall system costs,'' explained Kashi Manjunath, the Tactical Marketing
Manager for Atmel's PLD line of products.

These new small package configurations are especially useful for portable applications. ``Portable
electronic functions are getting smaller and are being crammed with more functions, thus placing a
premium for smaller packaging,'' Manjunath said. ``We expect this package format to be very
popular for PCMCIA cards, on double-side circuit boards, in memory modules and various
handheld electronic functions,'' Manjunath added.

``Use of this new package format will only increase device costs by less than 20 cents per unit,''
Manjunath added.

Headquartered in San Jose, California, with principal manufacturing facilities in Colorado Springs,
Colorado, and in Rousset, France, Atmel designs, develops, manufactures, and markets on a
worldwide basis Flash, EEPROMs, and EPROMs, as well as programmable logic,
microcontrollers, and application-specific devices.
