I doubt that the Senate locks up 50-50 very often. There are several moderates on both sides, and playing hard partisans at this time could be devestating to anyone. This could wind up working out well, if the moderates from each side come together to get something done. I know I'll be pissed in the R's start following DeLay into something that would make Gingrich look like Gephardt. If bi-partisanship does not take place in tangible and visible means, the whole system will fracture into many pieces in the next 10 years.
Also, I'd gladly let the Democrats have the Senate anyway. Bush will be appointing the heads of the agencies. No more stupid ergonomic rules under OSHA. No more wild-ass stabs at banning PCBs in total by 2006 by the EPA, which would cripple the electric utility industry and triple our already skyrocketing power bills. No more land grabbing for "Federal Monuments" that nobody will ever visit. No removal of the NW dams. No more devestating forest fires due to poor forest management that put people out of homes and burn the "habitat" which seems to be more important that people. Hopefully, no more nuclear secrets going to China from the Department of Energy. No more new Secretaries of Energy with no experience in the subject every 6-9 months just to build resumes, like Pena. No more indictments, allegations of improprieties, or accounting irregularities amongst the Cabinet members. No more hummers in the closets of the White House.
Losing the Senate is a small price to pay for restoring at least some of the honor and dignity to the Presidency, and more of a sense of normalcy to the heads of the government agencies. The EPA and OSHA had been getting particularly out of control. Even just 4 years of changes there can be very helpful to the cause of common sense and what is best for all Americans, not just freaks who care more about theories and excuses.
It's time to be responsible. Partisanship is irresponsible in light of what we have seen. |
