I'm not arguing in support of Al Gore. I'm arguing that there is no convincing national mandate for a strong turn in the conservative direction, and suggesting that it might be appropriate for Bush to develop a more moderate program of government than that outlined in his campaign.

Bush's victory was in no way a triumph for conservatism: he won only because the liberal vote was split between two candidates and distributed in a manner not conducive to winning the electoral college. If Bush is honestly interested in heeding the voice of the people, he should be taking note of this.

I do not consider myself either liberal or conservative; I am simply observing. My personal preference would be for fiscal conservatism combined with social liberalism, a winning formula that seems for some reason to scare both of the traditional parties to death.
