I spent Thanksgiving at a monastery of Catholic nuns founded on sacred American Indian soil by an English convert to Hinduism where the daily meditation incorporated several specifically Buddhist practices.

I think an evolution is in process. Hopefully all the best elements of each tradition can be retained and the outdated elements discarded. Hopefully it can be achieved as apolitically as possible. All traditional religions grew out of very narrow, violent, provincial environments and several ultimately prevailed by sheer brute force. Hopefully in a world as interconnected by commerce, media, and communication as this one now is, the transitions will be less brutal and more benign than in the past...but tribalism will have to be shed or attenuated in favor of being considered ultimately part of a larger group.

Incense isn't a bad thing, though, at least in terms of creating an exceptional atmosphere. It's importance is almost assuredly less for whatever effect it may have on any passing omnipotent beings than on the participants themselves. If a particular fragrance is used only in a spiritual setting, then it assumes a spiritual significance for the olfactor: it serves to reintroduce him physiologically to the same "state" he experienced the last time he inhaled that fragrance (that's why perfume and cologne are so important romantically).

Perhaps the same was true for burnt offerings, but I can't speak to that out of my own personal experience (except on a few unfortunate romantic occasions, LOL!, but that's another story entirely...).
